Hi Linda,

I took some time off to move and am just back at work now. Things went well, no problems on closing and I've been in my new home for a week. I have a bit of a furniture surplus problem but I'm dealing with it. I have a phone and I have cable, as well as food and beer - you know the important things! I think I definitely need an interior decorator though - you interested? Isn't that also part of your job as my agent?

I had some friends over on Labour Day and we watched the air show from the terrace - prime location. I also watched the fireworks that were going on at the CNE every night last week. So far I'm happy with the decision to buy the unit as I think I'm going to really enjoy it there.

I want to say thanks again for all the work you did on my behalf and for doing such a good job at looking after my interests. I was very pleased with the level of service that you provided as you always made yourself available which I know often involved juggling a very busy schedule. I'll definitely recommend you to anyone that I know who is looking for a real estate agent.

Take care and hopefully I'll talk to you soon.

John

CONDO LIVING - Toronto Star

Surfing lands dot.com kid a condo - But shopping on Web for a place to live is proving popular with people of all ages - By Peter Krivel, Staff Reporter

SUITE SHOPPING: Rob Laidlaw, 19, formed on line relationship with a realtor before doing any serious transactions. He feared he wouldn't be taken seriously - Web site led dot.com teen to condo

Rob Laidlaw faces the same discrimination many young people endure while shopping. When the 19-year-old goes shopping and is wearing his work clothes, there’s no problem. But when wearing casual wear, stereotypes come into play. That’s why he was a bit reluctant at first when searching for a condominium via the Internet. "My age probably played a bit of a role in it," he says. "Seeing that I’m younger, it probably would have been more difficult to go to a real agent in person and say 'I want to look at a $500,000 condo.' They wouldn’t take me seriously. "So I think developing a relationship between myself and the agent via e-mail prior to the actual dealing of any condos was helpful to me. I think it was after we set up the appointment that I said to her that I was fairly young."

Laidlaw is one of those techno-gurus we keep hearing about. At 19, he has his own Internet firm - www.verticalscope.com - where consumers can look for Web-hosting companies. Laidlaw began his condo search through the internet and such sites as www.mls.ca - and eventually linked to www.downtowntorontohomes.com, the Web site of Realtor Linda Chu. "I was looking through the Web site and there were a couple of condos I was interested in,’’ Laidlaw says. "I contacted Linda and we e-mailed each other back and forth before we arranged to see one.’’ He eventually settled on a $525,000 unit in the Phoebe at Queen and Beverly Streets because of its location. "It’s located on Queen St. in the heart of the entertainment district, so it provides me with easy access to restaurants, shopping and my office," he says.

Laidlaw says he usually works 10 hours a day and shopping online allows him to schedule things better. "It’s just a convenience factor. I can do things when I want to do it and when I have time in my schedule I can shoot an e-mail back to the agent. " "I think Linda Chu thought it was difficult to get hold of me by phone so she turned to e-mailing me when she needed to tell me something or had to ask a question."

All of this is normal for someone like Laidlaw, who lives in a virtual world. Not only does his company buy a lot of things online but he also buys such items as groceries, CDs and DVDs. "I don’t have to go to grocery store and put up with the elbows and that sort of thing,’’ he says. "I can just order them online and they’ll be delivered the next day. He says he’s found grocery shopping to be "pretty good," except for the blueberry muffins. "They come with an expiry date of the next day. It’s pretty difficult to eat six muffins in one day"

"So I think developing a relationship between myself and the agent via e-mail prior to the actual dealing of any condos was helpful to me." -ROB LAIDLAW
